Just announced by the Perth Mint are the Grey Kangaroo Gold Coins

This is the second of the Fauna gold Coin Series. The first was the Saltwater Crocodile. Due in May is the Emu, in July the Koala and in September will be the Kookaburra.

Discover Australia is a magnificent collector coin program from the historic Perth Mint. Scheduled for release between 2006 and 2008, the program comprises pure gold, silver and platinum proof coins depicting Australia's amazing fauna, landmarks and flora and these coins are available as an individual coin or in a subscription set.

This is a 99.99 percent proof quality gold coin with a the year-date and The Perth Mint's traditional ‘P’ mintmark also appearing in the design.

The coin's reverse depicts a mob of Grey Kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), one of many species of Australia's best known animal. Kangaroos are marsupials, a mammalian group that almost exclusively developed in Australia. In 1770, naturalist Joseph Banks recorded the aboriginal word 'gangaroo' to describe these beautiful creatures, which possess powerful hind legs for hopping and a pouch to carry their young.

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin depicts Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse.

Each coin is housed in a superb presentation case with a lid made from Australian jarrah timber. The case comes in a protective outer shipper featuring Discover Australia's distinctive logo and each coin is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
